Frederick Moves Toward Smoking Ban In Parks

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- The city of Frederick is moving toward a smoking ban in city parks.

The Board of Aldermen expressed support for the proposal Wednesday. The Frederick News-Post reports that the aldermen asked the city's Parks and Recreation Commission to recommend enforcement guidelines.

Ocean City banned smoking in two city parks and restricted it in others earlier this year. Rockville also restricts smoking in its municipal parks.

The Frederick proposal would ban smoking completely in all city parks.

Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Roelkey Myers says the concept is like a big wave rolling toward Frederick.

But Alderwoman Kelly Russell says there's no point in passing a law that can't be enforced.
