Assateague Closing In Advance Of Irene
BERLIN, Md. (AP) -- Maryland officials say Assateague State Park is closing because of Hurricane Irene.
The Maryland Park Service says campers must vacate the campground by 11 a.m. Friday and it will remain closed until
Wednesday morning. The park and the road onto the island will be closed to all visitors and traffic at 7 p.m. Friday.
State officials say the latest weather forecasts predict Assateague Island will be significantly impacted by Irene.
Assateague State Park is Maryland's only oceanfront park.
Assateague Island is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Sinepuxent Bay on the west.
