Some Md. Schools Will Be Closed On Monday

REISTERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Summer vacation will be a little bit longer for at least some Maryland school children, thanks to Hurricane Irene.

Ned Featherston, a policy systems analyst for the Maryland State Department of Education, said Sunday that several school districts scheduled to have their first day of school Monday have canceled classes.

They include: Baltimore, Charles, Harford, Howard, Queen Anne's, Prince George's, Worcester and Kent counties and Baltimore City.

About half of the state's 24 school jurisdictions were set to begin classes on Monday.

More school jurisdictions could cancel the first day of school later Sunday or even early Monday morning, mostly due to continuing widespread power outages. Parents and students are advised to check websites for their county school districts.
