BLOG: Mike Flanagan

I received the horrible news while I was on vacation through multiple text messages.  My condolences go out to his family and his close friends.  I'm not going to say I was close to him, but one of my fondest memories in radio is because of Flanny.  I was working on a morning show and I was set to call Mike Flanagan to have him on the show.  I called and introduced myself and Mike said "I know who you are, you do a great job on the show, and I listen to you guys all the time.  You keep me laughing."  Somebody that I watched and looked up to as a kid knew who I was and actually listened to me.

I'm not trying to be self centered and make this about me, but that moment was so surreal to me.  Every time after that moment when I was at an Oriole game he was very approachable and always willing to talk to anybody.  Seeing Jim Palmer and Rick Dempsey after the game brought a tear to my eye.  Such a sad situation for everyone left to try to pick up the pieces.  I just wanted to go on record to say that #46 was one of the best people that I have ever met in sports....PERIOD!!!!
