89,000 Still Lack Power Following Hurricane Irene

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore Gas and Electric is working to restore power to tens of thousands of customers in the mid-Atlantic region days after Irene hit the area.

The utility was reporting about 79,700 outages early Thursday, mostly in Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties, and Baltimore City.

It says it expects to restore power to a vast majority of customers by late Friday, with some scattered outages extending into Saturday.

The Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative says it has about 7,390 customers out.

Pepco says about 1,530 lack power in the Washington area. Nearly all of those outages are in Montgomery County.

Delmarva Power was reporting about 230 customers without power.

Dominion Power says about 55 customers in northern Virginia don't have electricity.
