GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) — Friends and family members are sharing memories of a Frostburg State University football player who died after collapsing during practice.
A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg for 22-year-old Derek Sheely.
The Germantown native died Sunday, six days after he collapsed.
Sheely’s father, Ken Sheely, says his son died from a head injury that he apparently sustained during contact drills.
Ken Sheely says he’d like to see society find ways to make the sport safer.
Derek Sheely, 22, was an honors student majoring in political science and history. His father says he had hoped to work for the CIA.
