Md. Trooper Strikes, Kills Del. Woman Along Side Of Road

STEVENSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland state trooper driving to a crime scene has struck and killed a Delaware woman who apparently stepped into the path of the patrol car in Queen Anne's County.

Maryland State Police says Iraina Curtis, 29, of Dover, Del., was killed in the crash. It happened just before 9 p.m. Friday on an access ramp off Route 50 in Stevensville.

Police say Trooper First Class Travis Nelson was responding to a call for a burglary in progress in Stevensville. Investigators say Nelson, 24, was not driving with his emergency lights or siren activated.

Police say Jerome Wheeler of Magnolla, Del., was with Curtis. Wheeler, 20, told investigators he and Curtis had been sitting on a jersey wall when Curtis stood up to make a phone call and was struck.
