OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — Sunny weather has saved a beach weekend on the shores of Maryland and Delaware after Hurricane Irene shuttered beach towns a week earlier.

Carol Everhart of the Rehoboth and Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce tells The Daily Times overnight visitation was down 30 percent at the beginning of last week. By the end of the day Friday, they were down only 10 percent. She says hotel numbers could be even better by the time everything is tallied Monday.

Ocean City spokeswoman Donna Abbott says a quick cleanup from the hurricane seemed to help businesses rebound for a good Labor Day weekend.

It was busy in the water, too. The Ocean City Beach Patrol had more than 60 rescues Saturday due to head-high surf. Sunday was calmer, though.
