US 301 Among Scores Of Roads Closed By Storms

LA PLATA, Md. (AP) --  The Maryland State Highway Administration says it's closing a section of southbound U.S. 301 indefinitely in La Plata due to storm damage.

The agency urged motorists on Thursday to take other routes, such as Interstate 95 or I-495, to get from the Baltimore-Washington area to northern Virginia.

U.S. 301 is a main road through southern Maryland.

The SHA says about 30 state-maintained highways are among the scores of roads closed by flooding in the Baltimore-Washington area and southern Maryland.

The agency says up to 10 inches of rain have fallen in the region since Wednesday

In northern Virginia, traffic backed up on the Dulles Toll Road outside the Capital Beltway in the early afternoon hours Thursday as drivers slowed to navigate several inches of water that flowed across the roadway.
