Police Investigating Fatal Shooting Of Woman In Columbia

COLUMBIA, Md. (WJZ)—A woman is murdered in a quiet Howard County neighborhood. Now police are searching for her killer.

Weijia Jiang has the latest on the case.

Howard County Police recruits scour the 8700-block of Hayshed Lane in Columbia, looking for clues to answer who killed 42-year-old Nichole McNair.

"We got multiple calls 10 o'clock last night reporting the sound of at least one gunshot," said Sherry Llewellyn, Howard County Police.

James Lang who lives nearby is one of many who called 911.

"I was taking out the garbage over there, coming back and heard a gunshot and then I heard a woman scream 'Oh my God' and said something else," Lang recalled.

Investigators say when officers arrived to the scene they found McNair's car still running. But they say it's still blurry why she came to this neighborhood in the first place.

"We do believe she was working as a bail bondswoman and we're not sure whether that's a factor in why she was in the area last night, but we're certainly looking into that possibility," Llewellyn said.

Online, McNair blogged about how her job affected her role as a mother of two sons.

All too familiar with crime, McNair said she fought hard to keep her boys from becoming another statistic.

"Every time you saw her pull up, you saw her two boys with her. Seems like she was a great mother and she stayed with her kids," said Aaron Ferguson, neighbor.

Near her East Baltimore home on Nichols Avenue, friends are devastated.

"She was so sweet," Ferguson said. "We just talked. But you never would've thought something like this could happen."

McNair was transported to Howard County General Hospital in critical condition but pronounced dead overnight.
