Suspect Arrested In D.C. Transgender Shooting

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Police in D.C. have arrested a 20-year-old man who they say shot a transgender female.

Authorities say Darryl Willard, 20, of northeast Washington surrendered Tuesday and was charged with assault with intent to kill while armed.

The woman he's accused of shooting allegedly went into a police station on Monday around 2 a.m. to report she was wounded while walking in the city's Southeast section. Police say the victim knows the suspect and is expected to survive.

The shooting is the latest in a series of recent attacks targeting transgender people in the District of Columbia, raising concerns among the transgender, gay and lesbian community.
