New Program Teaches Kids Saving & Sharing

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Saving and sharing are two lessons the Y of Central Maryland is hoping to teach kids with a new program.

Monique Griego was there for the kickoff which brought together some familiar faces.

Kids love Elmo. That's why he's the secret weapon behind a new kids' program about financial responsibility.

"I think it's a great idea.  They get to learn about saving and sharing at an early age, and it helps us as parents," said Laketia Knott.

PNC Bank and the Y of Central Maryland teamed up to bring the "For Me, For You, For Later" program to students in the Y's classrooms.

"It's really an effort to get in front of an issue that every kid needs to learn at some age," said John Hoey, President, Y Central Maryland.

The program targets kids in Head Start and preschool. While that may seem young, parents say it's never too early to learn how to save.

The program uses Sesame Street characters to teach kids how to save, share and manage money they earn.

But Elmo wasn't the only familiar face involved.  Baseball Hall Of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. is a big supporter of the program, and how it simplifies things for kids and parents.

"It all starts when they are younger, so it's very important to reach kids at a certain age and expose them to saving," said Ripken.  "Elmo has a fun disposition, but you are teaching concepts."

Parents are also excited for how these kids will benefit in the future.

"He'll be able to manage his money more," said Knott.

This year the program is starting in 52 classrooms, but will expand to more than 80 by next year.
