GAO: States Not Working Toward New Bay Goals

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Chesapeake Bay watershed states are not working toward new restoration goals, according to a new report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

The report released this month says most are working toward commitments in a 2000 agreement among the six watershed states. The report also calls for additional overall milestones for the entire restoration effort and an adaptive management process to allow for adjustments as needed. The GAO interviewed and surveyed state and federal officials for the report.

President Barack Obama jump-started the decades-old restoration effort with an executive order placing the federal government in charge of the previously state-led effort. The new strategy has since met resistance from agricultural and development interests and is being challenged in court.
