Speeding Driver Killed In Crash On Rt. 100 East

PASADENA, Md. (WJZ)—Deadly crash. A pickup truck driver is killed during a police pursuit in Anne Arundel County.

Meghan McCorkell reports investigators say the man was driving erratically and was purposefully swerving across lanes of traffic.

A wild pursuit down Rt. 100 ended when a blue pickup truck wrapped around a tree. The driver was killed.

State police say the man was going more than 20 miles over the speed limit and swerving all over the road when a trooper spotted him around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday.

"He actually moved into the slow lane closer to the trooper and continued to rapidly move his wheel back and forth," said Greg Shipley, Maryland State Police.

The man lost control. The truck did a 360 in the middle of the road. When the trooper approached again, he sped away going close to 100 mph.

"Vehicles were running off the roadway trying to get out of this man's way," Shipley said.

The truck eventually ran up an embankment, and slammed into a tree. The incident created a traffic nightmare.

"I sat in that traffic for about an hour, hour and a half," said one motorist.

Lanes closed on Rt. 100 for hours. Drivers were floored when they heard what happened.

"That's crazy," said Sharon Hoover, driver. "That's no respect for anybody at 4 in the afternoon on Rt. 100. I'm surprised it didn't turn into a pile-up."

Investigators say it's a miracle no one else was hurt.

Maryland State Police have not yet identified the driver. We know he was not the owner of that pickup truck. It's believed he borrowed the truck from a friend.

Detectives don't know why the driver fled from police. They'll use fingerprints to identify him.
