BALTIMORE (WJZ)– Smokers could soon pay extra for cigarettes. Another possible tobacco hike is in the works.

Political reporter Pat Warren explains the reason behind it is health.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Anti-smoking crusaders are stoking the fire for another tax hike on cigarettes, which would bring the state tax to $3 a pack.

“It’s crazy!” smoker Ashley Pinson said. “It’s bad enough we paying $2 now, to raise it to three… I think maybe that’s just to get people to stop smoking. I think that is the reason.”

That is the reason. Health Care For All would like to see smokers taxed out of existence.

“Nothing could be better for them and the state that people don’t smoke,” said Vincent DeMarco of the Maryland Citizens Health Initiative said.

Their strategy is to gain so much public support before they take their proposal to Annapolis that the General Assembly can’t say no.

“Already over 100 organizations from across Mayland have endorsed it, hundreds more will,” DeMarco said. “We’re going to make this happen.”

The mere suggestion may be enough for some.

“I’ve been trying to quit now, but I think this is it,” Pinson said. “This is my push that I need. This is ridiculous!”

While some may oppose a tax increase simply on principle, it’s hard to argue against something that encourages people to stop smoking.

Health Care For All wants the tax dollars earmarked for public health care costs.

Typlical of Maryland – another blow to people who live, work, shop and pay taxes. Hit them again. TO ME THIS IS TO THE POINT OF COMMUNISM/SOCIALISM!!!! How dare people say anything about smokers. It may be a bad habit, it may be a health issue but it can be said about shootings, muggings, murders, diseases, etc. But of course lets go after smokers. I’M TIRED OF MY RIGHTS BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM ME WHILE I PAY MY SHARE OF TAXES BOTH CITY AND STATE. The day will come when I can retire and I can guarantee it won’t me in Maryland. Especially as long as idiots like Owe”malley are in office. DEMOCRATS MAKE ME SICK AND APPARENTLY THE PEOPLE IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND LIKE BEING TOLD WHAT TO DO AND CAN’T THINK FOR THEMSELVES- I DON’T!!!! I can’t move yet but that day thankfully will be here within the next 4 years!!!!

If the Maryland Citizens Health Initiative wants to raise taxes to pay for health care needs then why doesn’t the Maryland Citizens Health Initiative propose an obesity tax. It could be applied by the pounds over weight.

Oh and by the way, I take my money (i.e., tax dollars) and spend it in other states. That is one way to reduce all of the Maryland tax burden on myself. I speak with my wallet.

Can’t be more right there. There’s way more obese people than there are smokers. It would be really bad for the obese smokers that drink though.

The state is trying to tax smokers and drinkers out of existence. What’s going to happen when they are gone and all the money they’ve grown dependent on from these “sin” taxes is gone too?

  5. Silver says:

These idiots just don’t get it. All raising the tax is going to do is drive more people to other states like Virginia.

0.30 Cents per pack vs 3.00 Dollars, take your pick. Democrats are suck imbeciles.

  6. Debbie says:

Meanwhile, those on public assistance go to the bank machine, draw out the “cash” portion of their benefits and purchase these same items on the tax-payers dollars but that is ok. What a joke. If drinking and smoking are so horrible, ban them. Oh but no we can’t do that because we want the taxes and the political contributions. But the surrounding states thank you for the business.

If cigarette somkers all quit. The country would probably go bankrupt. There would not be enough revenue to sustain the govt. I wuld like to see an investigation on how far MD would be in the red if all people stopped smoking. This is taxation without representation in it’s most basic definition.

Anti-smoking crusaders are a royal pain in the A Z Z! They need to mind their own business and tax the illegals! Hey! What a concept. These people need to be treated for their OCD against smokers. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND WORRY ABOUT YOUR OWN LIFE! They don’t pay my bills!

  9. Squaregrouper says:

Marty Owe’Malley and Co. are going to wonder why EVEN MORE people start “smuggling” cigarettes in from Virginia.

  10. Kay says:

As long as I am working I am going to smoke and buy beer. After I pay all my bills that is all I can afford. I may stop filing taxes though, I feel like they are getting enough out of me. Go hit up some of these illegals and get my tax dollars back from them!!!! SICK OF THE BS!!!!!

I could not agree more with some of the commnets made. Here is my thing [ don’t take this wrong way] but why not raise it to $75.00 tax per pack. That would encourage people to stop smoking. well atleast stop from buyin in state. It is a modern day probibition with cigs and beer these days in Maryland.

I agree with the obese tax, why not put a tax on HOHOS or bon bons or any other un healthy snack food. None of us will be alive when it happens, but soon it will be a 75% tax out of your check. We as american people have a right to revolt and start a resulotion, but the Go’vt who made these rights 100 years ago are not the same as the Gov’t now. they have somehow made bills and attached laws that pretty much stops and will punish us americans if we used our giving rights. How messed up is america these days WE are scared to stand up.

The Gov’t response is ” get out and vote” vote for what another crooked politician who is looking to some how gain money in his power position. I still think the if you hold a Gov’t office you should not be piad, it should be a voluntarly job. Only then would we see better living situations for our people.

Im not broke so this tax will not affect me.Its still an outrage nonetheless.Leave us smokers alone! We dont get wasted and crash cars like alcoholics do,and we don’t get stoned and hang out at Lexington Market like crackheads do.Its bad enough we can’t smoke where we want half the time, but to raise the price even higher is just b.s.

We are the only population (people who chose to smoke) that it is openly OK to denigrate… and apparently over-tax… not the obese… (note how well the soda-can tax went over… which was the same as the tobacco tax, but depending on the consumption of High-Fructose Corn Syrup to either make $$ for the state or keep people from buying 500 calorie soft-drinks…) companies could actually get away with lobbying against that tax… who represents me…? no one… and I’ll have to pay another $500 to the state to take care of all the fatties that don’t smoke… Something’s wrong here…

  14. DemoNcraT says:

I wish their was a tax on idiot governors, we would then be able to afford living in this state.
