O'Malley Formally Announces Redistricting Session

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Gov. Martin O'Malley has formally announced that a special session on congressional redistricting will begin next week.

O'Malley, a Democrat, issued an executive order on Wednesday.

It calls for the session to begin Monday in Annapolis.

The timing of the session has been known for months, and the executive order is a formality.

Maryland must pass a congressional redistricting plan before the start of the 2012 legislative session in order to conduct the presidential primary on April 3, 2012.

Early voting centers will be opening March 24.

The state's eight districts are being redrawn based on the results of the 2010 census.
