Copper Thief Allegedly Called Police For Help

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Frederick police say a burglary suspect called them to ask for a ride home after he spent five hours out in the cold.

Police said Sunday that they took Teddy Deavers, 24, into custody instead.

The Gaithersburg man was being held Monday on burglary and conspiracy charges and couldn't be reached for comment. Court records didn't list a defense attorney.

Police say Deavers and three others were spotted stealing copper from a construction site late Saturday night.

Officers quickly caught three of the men. But they say Deavers remained at large until nearly 5 a.m., when he called police from a gas station and demanded a ride home.

They say Deavers complained that he was cold and wet. Overnight temperatures were in the upper 40s.
