Baltimore Makes It Easier For Residents To Recycle
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore City is making it even easier to go green.
Jessica Kartalija reports the new Citizen Convenience Center opened Tuesday, giving city residents an improved place to drop off recycling.
On Baltimore City's Sisson Street, a new convenience center is making recycling just that: convenient.
"If you brought a larger item or heavier item, there was no way to get it into the roll-offs, unless you were Hercules. DPW and the Bureau of Solid Waste worked with engineers with DOT to build a ramp and platform," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
City residents can now easily toss recycling at the Sisson Street facility that just got a $600,000 makeover.
"Much more convenient, much easier. Some people had a hard time lifting things over the roll-off. It's much easier and more convenient," said Robert Murrow, Baltimore City Department of Public Works.
Now, for the first time ever at the new center, you'll be able to recycle styrofoam.
"Starting at the end of the month, we will allow residents to bring hazardous waste here every Friday and Saturday from April to November," Rawlings-Blake said.
The city currently has single-stream recycling. Crews will take three 32-gallon cans each week.
"If you have hard plastics that we don't take curbside, you can come to Sisson Street. If you have bulk trash or a lot of trash and cleaning your house or more than we can take during waste collection, you would come to Sisson Street and drop it off," Murrow said.
You can recycle pretty much everything here, with the exception of styrofoam peanuts. They say they're still working on that.
Baltimore City also has one plus one collection, meaning crews pick up recycling and trash every week.
