Sherwin-Williams To Pay $570K For Hazardous Wastes
BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Environmental Protection Agency says paint-maker Sherwin-Williams has agreed to pay $570,000 for alleged hazardous waste violations at a Baltimore plant.
The EPA announced the civil penalty Tuesday, saying the company was cited for failing to immediately respond to and prevent leaks of hazardous materials.
The federal agency says the company has not admitted or denied liability, but the penalty reflects compliance efforts and
cooperation in the investigation by Sherwin-Williams. A telephone call and email sent to the Sherwin-Williams Co. seeking comment were not immediately returned Tuesday afternoon.
The EPA says the penalty was leveled following a June 2009 inspection and a follow-up investigation that led to citations for violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which governs hazard waste treatment, storage and disposal.
