Deputy, Man Identified In Fatal Shooting

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. (AP) -- The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office has identified a man killed during a struggle with a sheriff's deputy.

Authorities say about 3:20 p.m. on Thursday, deputies were called to a home in Lexington Park for a domestic assault. Police say DFC Robert Gill tried to arrest Kotrell Omar Newsome, 38, but he resisted and a violent struggle ensued.

Deputies say Gill deployed his stun gun, which was ineffective. Gill was injured during the struggle and discharged his gun.

Newsome was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gill has been placed on routine administrative leave while an investigation is conducted.
