Occupy Baltimore Protesters Prepare For Possible Showdown With Police

BALTIMORE (WJZ)– Enough is enough. Baltimore City is fed up with the Occupy Wall Street movement that still won’t budge.

Andrea Fujii reports protesters are bracing for a possible eviction.

It’s unclear exactly when protesters may have to leave, but it does appear their time for camping out is running out.

There are protesters, some quite loud, at McKeldin Square in downtown Baltimore. Their grievances are being aired under the watchful eye of police.

“I am very clear that the City Council has made a huge mistake by trying to threaten us or push us out,” said C.T. Lawrence Butler, an Occupy Baltimore protester. “And if they act on that, it’ll be an even larger mistake.”

The Occupy movement has made it clear they’re here to stay, yet Baltimore City leaders are suggesting the campers are wearing out their welcome.

Mayor Rawlings-Blake says the protesters can’t live at the Harbor.

“This isn’t a conversation about injustice or greed on Wall Street,” she said. “This is about a camp-out. And McKeldin Square and any of our public spaces are not for that reason.”

When pressed, the mayor gave no clear timeline on when the evictions might take place.

McKeldin Square is the designated protest area in the Harbor. Many occupiers say they’re willing to get arrested.

“My tent is right over there,” protester Taimak Holland said. “It’s green and shiny. But most of us are prepared to go to jail only because we don’t think anything bad will happen from it.”

“People have been advised as to, you know, how long you’re going to be on a misdemeanor charge, how long you’re going to be in Central Booking if you go to Central Booking,” protester Jason “Citizen” said.

As the police chopper flew overhead, people at the protest seemed unconcerned. The city says it’s still willing to negotiate for a peaceful resolution.

The protesters at McKeldin Square had a meeting at 8 p.m. Wednesday to try to formulate their response and to negotiate with the city. The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) has written a letter to Mayor Rawlings-Blake and asked her not to evict anyone.

There’s a similar situation in Atlanta. That city has cleared protesters out of Woodruff Park.

Members say as of Tuesday, the Occupy movement has been in Baltimore for three weeks.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Agree with them or not, the first amendment of the constitution protects their right to peaceably assemble. Take away their rights just because you don’t like what they have to say and you take your own rights away.

    • Mr.right

freedom to turn our country into a welfare state?

      • Liz

Freedom to get a job, equal pay, medical assistance & to have the middle class working people back again! This state is among every state in this country that have people still looking for work, I know I am one of them! So all you working so & so-s know that not everyone here in MD is trying to milk the government. The government still needs to help the unemployed. So before you start running off about the unemployed people in our state – look around because one day it might be you!

    • Liz

      Right on!

  • Ebony

  • Aimee Bildstein

To the Mayor and those who see the 99% as lazy,
You do realize that it is an AMERICANS god given right to question our Leaders, What the Mayor of Baltimore is doing is UNCONSTITUTIONAL, she is trying to Rip away the rights of Americans by forcing the Protestors to leave the park, they are not bothering anyone and have the right to Peaceful Assembly to find a Solution to the Problem of a CORRUPT Government and even a more Corrupt Corporate system. How Can the Mayor look at her self in the mirror knoiwing that Stripping away the rights of people is making them nothing less then 2nd class citizens? How can she look at her children knowing that her actions are going to cause a ripple and effect her childrens lives? DO theese POLITICIANS even care about the people who PAY thier Salaries? I

    • Dahlen

I’m part of the 99% and I want them out.

    • eeyroe13

You can question your leaders without costing the city more money. You can protest without costing the city money to police you and clean up after you. They will receive their slaries wether protesters are there or not. All they are doing is making sure there is less money in the city budget; not just Baltimore but Atlanta, Philadelphia, etc. Get educated about how change really occurs in the this country and work to make a difference.

  • HA HA HA

Don’t make them leave. This is the most out of towners the city has seen in years

  • lisa morrow

These protesters are NOT lazy. They are tired of greedy corporate buisnesses robbing Americans blind. They are frustrated because they are enetring an economy with no jobs available to them. They are tired of the rich getting huge tax breaks, when the average american in taxed to death. Those of you posting these nasty comments are also the 99%. You are just to blind to realize it. When was the last time you bought something that was labeled “American Made”? When was the last time you heard of a mortgaga company the worked with someone to save their home??? I think if you lost your job, your home, and could not find a new job, or could not afford to pay rent because a mortgage company has robbed you blind you would be whistling a different tune. We have Americans who have worked hard everyday of their lives loosing everything they have worked for. We have men and women who have fought for our country living in the streets homeless and hungry. You better wake up. The rich run this country, our government is archaic and NO LONGER WORKS FOR THE PEOPLE!!!!!! WE ARE THE 99%!!!!!! It is people from all walks of life, all ages who want a change, who know the american dream has become the american joke. we have serious issues with our country, and I am PROUD of the PROTESTERS for standing up for what the believe in!!!!!!

    • Dahlen

I’m part of the 99%, and I don’t want them there. They can leave or they can get tossed in the police van. It’s their choice.

how many bougth made in china instead of made in the usa you get what you sow

  • jerry Frey

Abraham Lincoln said this: “If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.”

  • Laurel

if they want to protest anything go protest the welfare people that take our earned money so they can sit on their butts at home, the food stamp / wic program they give money to the people that milk the system, the people that get social security disability checks for nothing….oh wait that will mean that they are hitting the root of the problem and heaven forbid they bring out the real problems of this world…..standing outside a corporation obviously has done NOTHING….move along lazy, lazy folks.

    • More government agencies needed

Lazy? How can you say these Americans are lazy? They are out there in the elements fighting to bring awareness to corporate greed!

Laurel, try comparing apples to apples.

  • Crazy!

I”m calling it now. This is how it will go down. The Baltimore City Police will be told by the Commissioner and Mayor to remove the protesters by any means necessary. Then, when they start doing what they are ordered to do, someone will whip out their cell phone, video the removal, and then the Commissioner and Mayor will go on TV talking about how terrible the police officers are that just followed their direction to remove by any means necessary. The protesters will sue the city for millions of dollars and win.

    • Crazy!

I forgot to add that the police officers who were just following orders will be fired.

  • Educating Laurel

You right wingers send you agitators in to start trouble to make them look as if they are free loading bums on the streets. You forget the 60’s when you were smoking pot and doing the same thing to bring about change. You conservatives say you are Christian, but you are like the chief priests and Pharisees doing the time of Jesus. You stand in the public square and profess doing the work of God, but behind closed door you rob the poor, deny help for the homeless, widows, children and the less fortunate of us. Your greed will cause you to burn in hell.

  • No, I'M calling it...

What will really go down is Mayor SRB will give the go ahead to clear the Square and the police will bring in their tear gas& billy clubs and because Baltimore is a violent City full of freeloading thugs, they will join in the fun and turn it into a looting bonanza! Anyone who owns a business at the Inner Harbor, you better clear your inventory and throw up your gates as soon as you hear SRB say “Go”.

  • Angelflora

I wonder it any of the protesters are actually registered to vote.

  • Kathy

They should be protesting Congress and those who actually make these things happen.

  • Walkingman

Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose

    • DT

It’s MONDAY! What has your group done for the WORKING and LIVING 99% ? You are still outside. You are still cold. You chose to be that way. I am working (yes, was unemployed 4 years). Today, my kids got fed and clothed and went to school. They came home, to a WARM home. Why? Beacuse I WORK FOR CORPORATE AMERICA!

FYI… If anyone wants a JOB that PAYS… you will need to go to the CORPORATE OFFICE and APPLY!
If you have a misdemeanor with Occupy whatever… it’s not going to go so well. Think about THAT come Christmas morn!

  • moleman

The occupiers belong in N.Y. ‘ wall street & Washington D.C. Leave them alone, they are benefitting future generations of your childrens children. Greed & Republican adminstrations have hollowed out America & sent all the jobs overseas. The average semi or no skilled worker here has no chance. It’s bad & getting worse.

  • Collin

Just like S**T rolling down hill, the “trickle down economics” that republicans got rolling in the 80’s; has run over the middle class, then overseas to the cheapest workers the multinationals corporations can find. Now, that they have used up the American worker, and driving this country’s economy into the ground, they wonder why everyone is protesting. I guess they think we all should eat cake.

  • The 1% Are Worried

Leave it to our government, to make the decision to get rid of those who “point out a problem” , rather than to solve the problem.

The bottom line is that our government does not have a problem with us being unemployed. If this were not true, they would not have allowed it to get this far.

As I have watched the protests, and the demonstrations, I have come to realize that those who disagree with the demonstrators and criticize their position, are those who are currently employed, and or, those who benefit from the situation that the demonstartors are protesting.

The thing to keep in mind, is that the negative comments against the protests, are coming from a small percentage of the population. Everyone knows, without a doubt, that 99% of Americans are currently struggling in today’s economic crisis.

  • To Brandie and Others

Thank you, Brandie, for taking the time and putting forth the effort to “demonstrate” what the majority of us are thinking and feeling.

Don’t let a little criticizm and negativity get you down or disuade your cause.

Remember: You are representing the concerns of the majority of Americans and others worldwide. 99% of all citizens are struggling in today’s economic crisis.

Who cares what 1% of the population thinks? 99% want a better life for themselves and their loved ones.
