Truck Carrying Fuel Crashes Near Conowingo Dam

CONOWINGO, Md. (AP) -- Authorities in Maryland say a truck driver is hospitalized after crashing a fuel tanker near the Conowingo Dam.

An official with the Cecil County Department of Emergency Services says the accident happened Wednesday night around 11 p.m. A duty officer with the Maryland State Police says fuel from the tanker leaked onto the face of the dam and onto the track of the Norfolk Southern Railway.

Maryland State Police Sgt. Terrence Lanier says Route 1 over the dam and Route 222 near the dam are closed. Lanier did not know the cause of the crash or how many gallons of fuel the tanker was carrying.

The driver was flown to a Baltimore hospital where he was being treated for burns. The extent of his injuries was unknown.
