Former Harris Aide To Run Against Ruppersberger

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Larry Smith, a former aide to Republican Rep. Andy Harris, says he plans to run against Maryland Democratic Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger.

The 46-year-old reservist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said in a telephone interview Friday that he plans to officially announce his bid for the 2nd Congressional district Nov. 7 in Baltimore County.

Smith, a former race horse trainer, lives in Timonium. He served in Afghanistan for about seven months last year.

The Republican says he would take a financially conservative approach to Washington if he is elected. He says Congress has treated the nation's finances like monopoly money for too long, and it's unsustainable.

The 2nd Congressional district includes parts of Harford, Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties. It also includes a small portion of Baltimore City.
