Volunteers Plant Trees In Rain And Snow

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—In this weather, most of us are trying to find ways how not to go outside.  So, who would think that this is a good time to spend a few hours volunteering to be out in the rain, slush and snow?

Mike Schuh has the answer from Cherry Hill.

To be out in this weather, it had better be pretty important.

"Just planting trees, been out here for an hour and a half now," said Kenny Felsenstein, volunteer.

Planting trees? You couldn't pay people to be out here.  Yet some are outside for free.

Some 80 volunteers are getting 350 trees going in the ground on a miserable day.

"I think people forget that when it's raining you can do stuff outside," said Darren Crew, of Blue Water Baltimore. "Just need the proper gear and attitude. People today were great, awesome, great attitude, wanted to plant trees, get dirty and give a good community effort."

The group Tree Baltimore has a goal of a million trees in Baltimore by 2030. Saturday they picked a two school campus in Cherry Hill.

"So I just thought that I'd help the environment, and I think this is a school and give it some shade," said Felsenstein.

"Schools are one of the few places you can plant a lot of trees, so we make an oasis , a place where we can cool the air and give the kids a respite from all the concrete," Crew said.

In addition to the 300 trees planted Saturday, Tree Baltimore had 100 trees available to give away to city residents.

Tree Baltimore is part of the city Department of Parks and Recreation.
