Treating Horses Like True Athletes

Written by: John Maroon- President Maroon PR

Something cool is happening at Sagamore Farm, the thoroughbred horse farm in Baltimore County owned by Under Armour founder Kevin Plank.  They are not only raising and developing winning horses, they are developing a brand and viewing the farm as a professional sports team and the horses as their athletes.

This is a very unique approach in the horse racing world.  The first goal of the team at Sagamore Farm is to breed and grow a Triple Crown winner…as in all sports, winning changes everything.  The next goal is to have people attend the race tracks and root for and bet on Sagamore horses.

Sagamore Farm is active on Twitter and Facebook and YouTube and their website continues to grow with a fan club called the Three Diamond Club and a "coming soon" merchandise store.

Any of you even slightly familiar with the Under Armour brand shouldn't be too surprised by how Sagamore's brand is developing and, like Under Armour, a model will most likely be created that others in the industry will follow.

It does all come down to winning and a year ago that started for Sagamore Farm when Shared Account won the prestigious Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (GI) as a 46-1 long shot and put Sagamore Farm back on the horse racing map.  Well this Friday she defends her title at Churchill Downs in what will most likely be her final race…and again she is a long shot at 30-1.  The race will air live on ESPN2 with the post time slated for 6:50 p.m.

Sagamore's stable continues to grow and add impressive horses to their "roster" such as Monzon, Humble and Hungry, Millionreasonswhy, Tiger Walk and All Mettle.  The future of horse racing in Maryland is foggy but the vision is becoming more clear everyday thanks to Sagamore Farm and Kentucky Derby winning trainer, Graham Motion's Herringswell Stable based at Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md.
