Family And Friends Remember Murdered Frostburg Student

FROSTBURG, Md. (WJZ) -- It's a murder that shocked one local college campus. Saturday, friends and family said goodbye to a Frostburg State student who was killed near campus.

Gigi Barnett has more on the sad service.

It was an emotional farewell for a slain Frostburg State student, killed near campus earlier this week.

With song, prayer and poems, friends and family of 19-year-old Kortneigh McCoy said goodbye.

"I thank God for Him letting me have Kortneigh in my life because she was truly a blessing," said friend Kia Worthan. "It's really terrible that it takes a death to bring a family together, but that's the way it works and for this family. We are not broken.

Early Sunday morning, Frostburg police found McCoy lying in the street and bleeding to death from stab wounds. She was feet away from an off-campus house where students hosted a party the night before. Witnesses say they saw 23-year-old Shanee Liggins with a knife, wielding the fatal blows.

The university says McCoy was a leader on campus.

"Our university community has been shaken to its core," said Frostburg State Vice President Thomas Bowling. "One of our tasks now is to find ways to honor Kortneigh's spirit."

Frostburg students packed at least three buses to attend this weekend service. Meanwhile, the university has asked McCoy's pastor to host a town hall meeting on violence on campus.

"Something is wrong when the college campus starts to look like and act like a prison yard," said Rev. Jamal Bryant, pastor of the Empowerment Temple. "I want to try to raise the morale and raise the standard on the campus."

The university offered counseling services at the funeral.

Liggins is behind bars, charged with first- and second-degree murder.
