WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington’s National Cathedral held its first public worship service since it was damaged in an August earthquake.

Sunday’s services followed the consecration of a new bishop on Saturday, the first event at the cathedral since the quake. The Washington Post reported that more than 2,000 worshippers gathered to hear the service by the Rev. Dr. Mariann Edgar Budde. Signs of the earthquake’s damage were apparent with black netting strung over the worshippers’ heads to guard against falling stone chips.

The weekend ceremonies kicked off a week of events to celebrate the reopening of the cathedral which is structurally sound but suffered damage to the cone-shaped pinnacles of its soaring central tower as well as other areas.
