PSC Denies Gas Rate Increase

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Maryland Public Service Commission has rejected an application by Washington Gas Light Co. for a substantial rate increase for its gas customers in Maryland.

WGL had asked for a rate increase that would allow it to boost operating revenue by $30 million. The company wanted to use the money to replace piping infrastructure. But the PSC says it will only allow WGL to raise $8.4 million, resulting in a rate hike of $1.27 to the average customer's monthly bill.

The commission says "infrastructure improvements do not justify a surcharge" on customers.
