W.Va. Man Charged With Murder

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A videotaped statement shows that the former boyfriend of a slain Hagerstown woman initially told police that his ex-girlfriend shot herself in the head.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that the statement played Monday during a pretrial hearing in Washington County Circuit Court shows Randy McPeak telling a detective that he was coming down the hallway of his ex-girlfriend's house when he heard a bang and then saw her put a gun to her head.

McPeak, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., is charged with murder in the June 10 shooting of Heather Harris in Hagerstown.

His defense attorney is seeking to keep statements McPeak made to authorities from being used at his trial, set to begin Dec. 6. He also wants items seized from McPeak's car to be excluded.
