Bay, Bags On Conservation Voters Agenda

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Chesapeake Bay and shopping bags are on the legislative agenda for the Maryland League of Conservation Voters.

The league scheduled two public meetings this week and plans a third Dec. 5 in Salisbury to discuss with voters its priorities for the upcoming General Assembly session.

League spokesman Pete Johnson says the group is supporting legislation to limit the use of plastic bags similar to the District of Columbia's nickel-a-bag tax that went into effect last year. Johnson says the league is also lobbying for bills to help Maryland fully implement the federal Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay restoration strategy. And the group says it is behind efforts by Gov. Martin O'Malley's administration to expand offshore wind-power production.
