Horse Rescue Wins Toyota Truck Contest

GLENVILLE, Pa. (WJZ) -- A horse rescue has extra horsepower after winning a nationwide contest.

Andrea Fujii tells us how the community helped them.

It's an early Christmas for Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue. They won a brand new truck in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good contest.

"We really didn't believe it, we were like, 'No!'" said Jo Deibel from Angel Acres Horse Rescue. "We were like, 'Did we win a truck?' 'No!'"

Toyota gave away one car a day for 100 days to the charity that received the most votes on Facebook.

With 42 percent of the vote, Angel Acres received its keys on Tuesday. They're based in Glenville, Pa., rescuing abused horses and ones bound for slaughter.

Right now they're caring for 19 horses.

"Just run basically the rescue," Deibel said. "We really need a truck. And the two we have are more than 20 years old, and they're in terrible shape."

They'll use the truck every day to move hay, straw and other supplies.

A truck like this costs upwards of $40,000, money not quite in their budget.

By replacing an old vehicle, Angel Acres can now kick their rescue into higher gear.

"We just thank everybody that voted for us," Deibel said. "We couldn't have done it without them."

That was the first year for the Toyota contest and they plan to do the same thing next year.
