Eastern Shore Deer Camera Helps Police Nab A Wanted Man

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- It's video meant to spot deer, but instead it catches a burglar in action. Just over the Bay Bridge, a hunter's surveillance camera helps investigators track down a wanted man.

Kai Jackson has the story.

Deer camera video catches a suspected prowler in the act in a Stevensville, Queen Anne's County, neighborhood. The camera was set up in the neighborhood by a resident fed up with reports of car break-ins.

On Maryland's Eastern Shore, those "Scout Cams" used for hunting and triggered by motion detectors are everywhere.

"I'd say 90 percent of your hunters are going to have a camera, if not two," one Eastern Shore resident explained.

"We have hundreds of hits," said Queen Anne's County Sheriff Gary Hoffman.

The video was posted to Facebook by Hoffman, and tips started pouring in.

"It's just amazing to see how active the public was," he said.

"I linked it and sent it to my friends, and before long it was linked everywhere," one county resident said.

All those tips led to the arrest of 32-year-old Jason Grimes, captured by sheriff's deputies after a three-hour chase through cornfields and woods.

"He's lucky he didn't get shot."

"That's just, straight-up smart. That's the Eastern Shore for you!"

Grimes was wanted in Talbot County for violating his parole in another burglary. Right now, he is a person of interest in the Stevensville thefts.

State police, Natural Resources Police, and the Maryland Transportation Authority, all helped in the search for Grimes.
