GAMBRILLS, Md. (WJZ) — A sex assault inside an Anne Arundel County school strikes fear in the community. Police say it happened in the girls’ bathroom during school hours.
Kai Jackson has more on the investigation.
Neither police nor Anne Arundel County school officials are saying much while this alleged sexual assault is being investigated.
Anne Arundel County Police say it happened about 3:30 p.m. Monday in Gambrills. They say a female student at Arundel High was sexually assaulted by a male student.
“The victim and the suspect were known to each other. They were both students there at the school and the incident happened there inside the school, as it was reported to us,” said Justin Mulcahy, Anne Arundel County Police.
“Yeah, I heard about it,” said Candace Bracely. “Like, everybody was saying that it was really bad.”
Police say the assault took place in a bathroom at the school. Apparently, the crime came to light when the school system received an anonymous call that it happened.
“Makes me worry that if I go in there, the same thing’s going to happen to me, so I don’t use the bathroom,” Bracely said.
“I always thought that Arundel was the best school in the world in Anne Arundel County but it’s a surprise to me,” said former student Sam Parrish. “I don’t know.”
Anne Arundel County Police say the investigation is in the early stages. While it’s underway, they want to keep the alleged victim and suspect apart.
“We’re working with the school primarily to focus on making the victim…prevent any future contact between the victim and the suspect as our investigation continues, but again, it’s very early right now,” Mulcahy said.
Parents of Arundel High students were notified about the incident by phone and email.
