Man Arrested For Promising NFL Player Appearances At Schools

ABERDEEN, Md. (WJZ)-- Authorities have arrested an Annapolis man accused of making false promises to bring Ravens players to school assemblies.

Joseph Myron Gill, 62, was taken into custody on theft charges at an Aberdeen hotel at 5 p.m. Wednesday. He is being held at the Harford County Detention Center.

Gill is charged with two counts of theft of less than $1,000 and one count of running a theft scheme. The charges were filed by Queen Anne's County, which issued a warrant for Gill after two schools there said they were cheated.

According to Queen Anne's County Schools, Gill promised to arrange for Ravens cornerback Ladarius Webb and other players to appear at assemblies at local schools and speak to students about character education, but Gill never delivered. School officials said that in a few cases, he brought a different, lesser-known player.

Webb and the Ravens have said they are not associated with Gill.

The Queen Anne's Sheriff's Office got tips about Gill's whereabouts after the case received media attention last week.

Gill is also under investigation in Anne Arundel County, where 17 schools were scammed out of $14,100 in total.
