Prince George's County Council Picks Leaders

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A divided Prince George's County Council has selected a new chairman and vice chairman.

The Washington Post reports the Council on Tuesday unanimously elected Andrea Harrison to serve as chairman for the next 12 months. Harrison had been passed over for chairman last year after then-Councilwoman Leslie Johnson supported Ingrid Turner's bid for the position. Turner's term ended Tuesday.

The Council also re-elected Eric Olson as vice chairman.

Johnson resigned from the Council in July after pleading guilty in a federal corruption probe that also ensnared her husband, former County Executive Jack Johnson. She will be sentenced this week.

On Tuesday, Jack Johnson was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from developers doing business with the government.
