Sen. Cardin Holding Water, Wastewater Hearing

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Ben Cardin is holding a hearing to discuss the nation's aging water and wastewater infrastructure.

Cardin says hundreds of water main breaks occur daily nationwide and aging infrastructure is posing risks to human health, safety and environmental quality. The Maryland Democrat says the hearing is being held to gain a national perspective on water and wastewater challenges as well as the opportunities that infrastructure improvements present for economic growth and job creation.

Speakers at the hearing Tuesday morning in Washington include the director of the federal Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Wastewater Management, the incoming president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and state and industry officials.

Cardin is chairman of the Senate's Subcommittee on Water and Wildlife.
