Homicide Rate In Baltimore City Declined Considerably

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Critics have called this “The City that Bleeds.” But there are signs of improvement across Baltimore.

Monique Griego has an inside look at the numbers.

The homicide rate has been falling here for the past few years, but now numbers have reach a new low.

The latest homicide was on Christmas Eve in Cherry Hill. A man was found dead in a home’s front yard.

With days to go before the calendar turns, 195 people have been listed as murdered this year.

Last year at this time, the number was 219.[

Going back to 1993, 353 people had been murdered.

“The goal is beyond the numbers because here’s what we know. While the numbers have come down over the last four years, it hasn’t changed people’s perceptions,” said city police commissioner Fred Bealefeld in a November interview.

The homicide rate has fallen every year since 2007–part of a nationwide trend.

“They’re using technology. They’re using data. Crime patterns. Maps to figure out where are the hotspots. What’s the trend, in terms of crime,” said James Alan Fox, criminologist.”

City state’s attorney Gregg Bernstein has been cracking down on repeat violent offenders like John Wagner, the man who killed Hopkins research Stephen Pitcairn.

Wagner is serving a life sentence.

The number of non-fatal shootings has also been cut in half in the past decade. And the number of juvenile homicides is also at a 30-year low. Over the past year, homicides have fallen about 10 percent.

The FBI says the number of murders, rapes, robberies and assaults have all fallen across the country.

I still personally believe that they post these kind of stories to intice the murderers to raise their spree. Why not wait until the begining of next year to post this story or better yet, why post it at all. If you don’t give the murderers a lime light or a trophey they will get bored of killing and probably stop. I can imagine how many murdereres that got away scott free and read or watch these stories and think to them selves ” I knocked off a few of those” than they go party and create miore babies to celebrate their winnings so to speak. WJZ please stop posting these kind of stories, you’re only adding fuel.

I don’t know what you are smoking, but you should share some with whoever wrote this article. Do you actually think these thugs and gangmembers read or watch the news? You need a reality check!

  3. Stats says:

These numbers have always looked suspect to me. If the number of homicides in Baltimore City is 195, I would be extremely interested to learn what the number of deaths that are listed as undetermined or unknown causes.

We live in a city riddled with violence yet the mandate is not only to keep people in Baltimore but acquire new residents. In order to get and keep people here Baltimore must appear to be safe and articles like this help. The fact is if we are only reporting 1/3 of the city deaths as homicide and 2/3 as undetermined or unknown causes then the numbers will paint a picture that places the police, the Mayor’s office and the city itself in a positive light. This is not the entire story.

The year is not over yet! They still have about a week to go! These articles are a huge misconseption.

  5. ha1 says:

This just means that they haven’t found the bodies yet. Baltimore will not get better, if not it’s some freak occurrence. Either that or they just suck at shooting. Baltimore couldn’t get better without the help of a 10.0 earthquake.

  6. Meeee says:

Bet the number is higher since some deaths cannot be proven as homicide. Or they’re still on missing persons list.

  7. Steven Spiegel says:

Do you actually believe that it make a damn bit of differance to anyone of the 195 people who has been killed how the #’s went down? All they no is that there loved one Son daughter what ever they are to the person is dead and never going to be there any more. Education on how to live and how to love is the key to curving the death toll. Until we all no how to love one another there will be homicides .

  8. Stupidity Rules says:

Gun violence is up in Baltimore. The homicide rate may have gone down but how about the ones who did not croak. How about giving us the statistics on the total gun violence in Baltimore.to see if any trend has changed.

Would someone please find “1-0-3-0- WITHERSPOON” and trank him/her. What does “NO HOUSING CRISES” and “UNEMPLOYMENT AT ALL TIME HIGHS” have do do with this report? Republicans and their buddies in Big Business are responsible for these items. Ronnie, George The First and George the Second are responsible for “THE 15 TRILLION DEBT” and the Republicans in both the House and Senate have been fighting for the last 3 years NOT bring the the debt they caused under control. But, again, neither have much to do with Baltimore’s lower homicide rate, unless the Republican caused Depression (oops, Recession) have put criminals out of work as well as American taxpayers. As for “Stupidity Rules”, while gun violence is up in Baltimore and the homicide rate may have gone down, maybe the illiteracy rate in the City has also affected their aim or, more likely, they’ve just taken their violence to surrounding counties.
