Elkton Wedding Chapel And Home For Sale

ELKTON, Md. (AP) -- A 19th century stone mansion and wedding chapel are for sale in Elkton, a town once known for its marriage business.

Owners Frank and Barbara Smith tell The Baltimore Sun they're ready to retire. They say they hope a buyer will retain the chapel, but add that the site across from the Cecil County courthouse would also be a prime location for lawyers' offices.

The Smiths are asking $350,000 for the four-story building on Main Street and say they will toss in all wedding amenities.

About 15 chapels once lined Main Street, drawing brides and grooms including singer Billie Holliday and baseball legend Willie Mays. But business has dropped over the years. The Smiths used to conduct about 750 weddings a year. They now average about 10 a month.
