BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Baltimore Police Department is seeking accreditation from a national organization as part of an effort to improve professional standards.

The department says in a statement that it will begin the process of becoming accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

Several top police officials are being given duties related to the effort.

Among them: Maj. Margaret Barillaro of the Southern District will be transferred to the Office of the Deputy Police Commissioner for Administration to serve as Director of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Compliance Unit.
