Comfort Food Turns Into A Booming Business

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- If you love a good grilled cheese, there's a place in Baltimore you have to try.  Actually now there are three of them.

Ron Matz reports four local guys have turned the ultimate comfort food into a booming business.

Welcome to the Grilled Cheese & Co., where Baltimoreans come for the greatest of comfort food.

"It's just so simple. People want comfort food right now.  The cold weather is coming.  With the economy, you can't beat getting a gourmet sandwich for our prices.  You can also bring your children, too. We have great kids' meals," said Scott Pevenstein, owner of Grilled Cheese & Co.

The new Federal Hill store is their third location.

"After doing some festivals, we opened the Catonsville store in April 2010.  We opened in Sykesville last April. April is National Grilled Cheese Month.  We're really excited to open the Federal Hill store. We opened in November," said Pevenstein.

They make mouth-watering sandwiches and hot soups.

"It is definitely the ultimate comfort food.  Who doesn't like to sit down and have a nice hot sandwich with cheese, butter and bread? I don't think it gets much better than that," said James Lancelotta, Grilled Cheese & Co.

You can pick up a sandwich at Ravenswalk.  Nightowls will love the Federal Hill location.

"We're excited to be at Ravenswalk.  It's out first year there.  We're outside.  We'd love to have you come by before the game and pick up a sandwich," said Pevenstein.

"We are open until 2:30 in the morning on the weekends at the Federal Hill location.  For anybody out late night partying come in and try a grilled cheese sandwich. It's a little bit different than the local pizza around here, not that the pizza's not good, but give the grilled cheese a try," said Lancellota.

Food and Wine Magazine just named Grilled Cheese & Co. one of the top 10 grilled cheeses in the country.

"It takes about six minutes from start to finish for our longest sandwich. Some we can get out in three or four minutes," said Lancellota.

"We're just going to keep rocking and rolling and keep making grilled cheeses and hot soup," said Pevenstein.

Americans make 2.2 billion grilled cheese sandwiches at home every year.
