Police Arrest Suspected Md. Serial Rapist In North Carolina

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) -- Police make an arrest in a series of violent home invasions. Victims were tied up and sexually assaulted in two Maryland counties.

Denise Koch reports with the help of surveillance pictures, detectives managed to track the suspect across state lines.

Police say Kevin Ray terrorized Montgomery and Prince George's counties with three brazen home invasions -- two involving sexual assault -- in the span of one week.

"I'm proud to stand here with Chief Manger and declare to both our communities that this threat is over," said Chief Mark Magaw, Prince George's County Police.

Officers arrested Kevin Ray, 33, in North Carolina. In his mug shot, he has bandages and is bruised.

"He attempted to flee when we went to arrest him," Manger said.

Officers say surveillance pictures of the suspect using a victim's debit card cracked the case. In a frank media briefing, police say Ray is a registered sex offender and was convicted of manslaughter in 1995. They believe he used the D.C. Metro to travel to his crimes and picked his target at random.

"As you look at the cases, they continue to escalate and it was very important to us that we stop him before someone got hurt or killed," Magaw said.

Police say Ray is a repeat offender and already spent 18 years in prison for manslaughter. He's now back behind bars without bail. He faces a court hearing Tuesday morning in Rockville.
