Notice For Redistricting Appeal Sent To High Court
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A group of residents opposing Maryland's congressional redistricting map say they're appealing part of their case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
A notice of appeal was filed Friday.
Jason Torchinsky, an attorney representing nine state residents, said the appeal focuses on a Maryland law that counts prisoners in the communities where they are from, instead of the prisons where they are confined.
He's arguing that states should all count population in a uniform way for congressional reapportionment.
Torchinsky says he will not be appealing other parts of the lawsuit, which was rejected by a panel of three federal judges in December. The plaintiffs also had contended that the map was gerrymandered and diluted the black vote.
Torchinsky says plaintiffs have 60 days to file additional documents with the high court.
