15 GOP Freshmen Criticize O'Malley Tax Proposals

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Republican freshmen in Maryland's House of Delegates are criticizing tax proposals.

Delegate Kathy Szeliga, who represents parts of Baltimore and Harford counties, said Wednesday that she believes the state is run by "taxaholics."

The 15 House freshmen are taking aim at a gas tax proposal that is expected to be made soon. Delegate Steve Hershey, whose district includes parts of four Eastern Shore counties, says residents on the shore already have been hit by a toll increase to cross the Bay Bridge.

O'Malley, a Democrat, has proposed reducing tax exemptions for people who make more than $100,000, affecting about 20 percent of Maryland taxpayers. He also is proposing to double, on average, the state's "flush tax." The governor says the revenue is needed for infrastructure after years of budget cuts.
