Getaway Car Causes Deadly Crash & Delays On Route 40

NORTH EAST, Md. (WJZ)—Police say a getaway vehicle caused a deadly crash that delayed traffic on Route 40 Monday afternoon.

Officials say five suspects attempted to steal a riding lawn mower from a nearby Lowe's store. But an employee spotted their getaway pickup truck and closed the gate just when they attempted to flee the scene.

The suspects then slammed through the closed gate and proceeded to drive to Route 40, where they were hit by an oncoming car.

One of the suspects riding in the back of the pickup truck was ejected upon impact. That suspect was flown to Christiana Hospital in Delaware where he/she was pronounced dead.

The person who hit the pickup truck was also sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are still looking from the remaining four suspects, who fled the accident scene.
