Police Shoot & Kill Suspect In A Hail Of Bullets; Incident Caught On Tape

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Dramatic new pictures and new information on the wild police chase and shootout that ended with a man dead in South Baltimore. It woke many people from their sleep as officers from four different agencies got involved in the pursuit.

Mike Hellgren has new information on this developing investigation.

It's unclear how long the investigation may take. Police never recovered a gun on the suspect, although he initially told them during a confrontation that he had one. The video uncovers the chaos that unfolded early Tuesday morning.

You hear the cop cars peeling away. Then, seconds later, there's at least a dozen gunshots.

That gunfire was over in three seconds. Police say four officers discharged their weapons killing Monpeet Chona-- a man they say stole a police car on the Beltway after threatening an officer, and later, changed cars and escaped the cops a second time in a wild chain of events that ended in South Baltimore.

Dave Caviness watched some of Chona's final moments unfold, hearing the SUV he was driving rush past his home.

"Must have been about 40 or 50 police cars following this car," Caviness said. "The cops were almost slamming into each other chasing after this guy."

And later, the gunfire rang in his ears.

"You heard probably 10 or 12 shots go off," Caviness said.

WJZ found Chona had a criminal record. He'd been charged in the past with eluding police. The four officers who fired their weapons are on routine administrative leave.

Kyle Caviness: "It was like pop. Pop. Then pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. It was handguns."
Hellgren: "It sounded like a machine gun to you?"
Kyle Caviness: "Yeah, it sounded like a machine gun."

Chona's family declined interviews--his brother did write on Facebook: "R.I.P., my little brother. I love you so much. I can't stop crying."

The officers who fired their weapons were from Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties.

Officially, police have not said how many shots they fired. Baltimore City Police are taking the lead in this investigation.
