Inmate Commits Suicide After Being Convicted
WESTOVER, Md. (AP) -- Corrections officials say a 27-year-old inmate at the Eastern Correctional Institution has hanged himself a day after being convicted on charges that could have resulted in a 60-year sentence.
Matthew Alan Schirling was found in his cell about 6 a.m. Wednesday. According to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, officers administered CPR until medical personnel arrive. Schirling was pronounced dead a short time after.
The Daily Times of Salisbury reports that a Wicomico County Circuit Court jury convicted Schirling on Tuesday on counterfeiting and weapons charges. He had been arrested in February after authorities seized more than $13,000 in counterfeit $100 and $50 bills from a Salisbury home.
