Rawlings-Blake Testifies At Union Pension Trial

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says her administration's overhaul of the fire and police pension plan in 2010 was done for the good of the city.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Rawlings-Blake testified Thursday for more than three hours, fielding questions from attorneys for the city and for the police and fire unions. The unions claim the changes violate their contract with the city, and the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Baltimore in 2010 is part of the effort to have those changes overhauled.

When it was suggested to Rawlings-Blake that the city could have raised taxes or cut services to fund the pension, she said that unions get to deal with math while she had to "deal with a struggling city."

Testimony in the trial resumes Friday.
