Police Officer Struck During Traffic Stop

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) -- Police in Howard County say an officer has been hospitalized after a drunk driver hit his police car while he was conducting a traffic stop near Ellicott City. The officer's injuries are not life threatening.

Police say Pfc. Terrance Sheppard had stopped a car on eastbound Route 40 at Route 29 around 11:45 p.m. Friday when his police car was rear-ended by the drunk driver. The police car then hit the car Sheppard had stopped, and that car struck Sheppard, who had gotten out of his vehicle to investigate.

The driver of the stopped car was not injured. The driver of the vehicle that hit Sheppard's police car, 45-year-old Sung Ok Jang of Ellicott City, was arrested for driving under the influence.
