Residents Express Disdain For Anne Arundel Co. Politics Following John Leopold's Indictment

GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ)-- Political problems in Anne Arundel County. A sex scandal involving County Executive John Leopold leaves local lawmakers in a tough spot.

Derek Valcourt has more on what residents are saying about the allegations.

County residents are paying attention, and many say they are not impressed with what's happening.

Embattled County Executive John Leopold faces criticism from voters after a criminal indictment alleges he used the officers assigned to protect him for personal errands and not official county business. Leopold insists those charges are not true.

"I'm very confident when all of the relevant facts are known, that we will prevail," he said.

Leopold's latest troubles come amid other political problems in Anne Arundel County. Earlier this year, one council member was removed from office as he heads to prison for tax evasion. Councilman Dick Ladd recently apologized for using a racial slur aimed at Asians.

"I say what I think. I try to do it as carefully as I can. Sometimes, I clearly don't," Ladd explained.

"I think Anne Arundel County does have a lot of problems," one resident said.

That leaves many in the county with real questions, and in some cases, downright disdain for their political leaders.

"It's disappointing to say the least," another resident said.

"These people who run for politics should be more careful about what they do," said another.

Valcourt: "Do you have any faith right now in your county government?"
Anne Arundel County Resident: "Not really."
Valcourt: "What about the county executive?"
Anne Arundel County Resident: "No, that's horrible. That's a terrible abuse of power."

Leopold faces five criminal charges, including four counts of misconduct in office. His first court hearing is scheduled for March 26.
