Smithsonian Hires National Geographic Executive

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Smithsonian Institution has hired the National Geographic Society's CFO to become president of the profit-making arm of the museum complex, overseeing retail, media and licensing businesses.

Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough named Christopher Liedel to the post Thursday. Liedel has been with National Geographic for 16 years, most recently as executive vice president and CFO. He joins the Smithsonian this month.

At the Smithsonian, Liedel will oversee a media division that includes Smithsonian magazine and the Smithsonian Channel on cable television. The retail business includes museum stores, a catalog, three IMAX theaters, food services and travel programs. The licensing business manages agreements with more than 40 companies using the Smithsonian name for consumer products.

At National Geographic, Liedel assisted with the launch of National Geographic Channels and publishing businesses.
